My first game was 1995 so never saw the good old days, standing on a terrace and all that.
So what was so good about it?

Yeah that's why I said not sure accurate, Chelsea taking the NB in their dreams! I think the bloke who wrote that had a vivid imagination. Still some I reckon is spot on and not a bad read for those younger interested.

Chicken Run - Hurst was playing for Stoke and is about to take a throw in. Terry Conroy comes towards him going "Geoff, Geoff" calling for it, and someone shouts at him "Oi, Mr Hurst to you you Irish cunt".
Even Geoff saw the funny side of that one.

Published in 1972 but thought this might bring back a few memories of the mile end days or some who went in the 60s, a few years before my time so an interesting read, although not sure all accurate?
What a load of old shit that is, anyone would think West Ham were run out of their own stands as well as away, that article is spot on about Tottenham though

Watching the band play before the match and cheering the band leader as he caught his stick or what ever its called.
Trying to understand and work out the half time scores next to the letters in the corner

Can remember Lawrie Leslie breaking his arm I think it was against Aston Villa.
Then coming back on and playing on the wing.

When my old man took me it was the West stand in 1976-1982, as soon as I was 15 and allowed to go on my own I bowled into the south bank, pigeon breast chest all pumped out

The Arsenal game you mention was infact a game where I ran on to the pitch to hug my then hero Laurie Lesley! After what you rightly describe as an extravagant cross from him somehow ended inthe gooners net.
I was pretty much alone in running on from the terrace under the West Stand. No stewards to worry about and I just returned back to my place. After embracing one of the bravest players to wear claret & blue (well green mostly) Lesley played much of his career with a built up boot to compensate for an oft broken leg.
The was no punishment for my pitch invasion on the day but subsequently when my action was reported to my dad (who was not there ) by two work mates who were and recognised me, I received a retrospective bollocking and gentle clip round the ear from my old man.

East Hammer - yes would agree 60s = great - my first game Aston Villa at home Jan 1962 - we won. As you say remember the crowd humor and at the time ahead of terrace fights and fan separation - that started a season or two later. Games like the one against Arsenal where Laurie Lesley broke his finger doing a save and went off with Moore going in goal . Lesley came back on with hand strapped up and paling on the right wing brilliantly banging in extravagant crosses helping to salvage a 3- all draw - now you wont' see that today. Also the FA Cup run and the 62/63 game with Everton . Pre game the Everton Toffee lady resplendent in a blue and white frilly layered dress and carrying a large basket walks around the ground throwing toffees to the crowd. When she gets to the North Bank the toffees and (and anything else the West ham fans can use) are being thrown back at her. She takes about 3/4 steps back onto the field of play to avoid the barrage - great stuff . We also won through a Budgie Byrne penalty = fine day out. Next game we got knocked out at Liverpool but got to win it the following year - as all you fans will know.
